Whimsical, Wild, and Wicked: Master These Halloween Hair Transformations

From the depths of the ocean to the shadows of the villain’s lair, leading stylists- Jess Gonzalez, Kayla Casey and Ellen Devine- are breaking down exactly how to style your hair for five iconic Halloween personas: A pink clown, a mermaid, a leopard, a vampire, and Maleficent.

Mermaid and Pink Clown

Jess Gonzalez is a prominent celebrity hair colorist and beauty influencer based in Los Angeles, California. Here is how to recreate her magical mermaid and cute clown looks that are sure to make a statement next weekend.

To create this mermaid wig, Jess applied PRAVANA VIVIDS Magenta + Clear Dilute to the roots. For the body she mixed in VIVIDS Periwinkle + Clear Pastel, Blue Topaz and Clear Pastel, Yellow, Neon Green, and lastly Magenta + Clear Dilute. She let the color process for 20 minutes before washing and drying the wig.

For the Pink Clown, Jess started by coloring the base of the wig with PRAVANA VIVIDS Pink. After it was done processing and dried, she pained dots with VIVIDS Yellow, Red, Orange, Blue Topaz, Violet, Magenta, and Neon Green. She let the dots process for 20 minutes, and then washed, dried, and styled.

Vampire and Leopard

Kayla Casey is an accomplished hairstylist, creative colorist, and educator currently based in Los Angeles, California. Here is how to create her sleek vampire and playful leopard look.

For the vampire look, Kayla started with PRAVANA VIVIDS Red as the base, then added VIVDS Black for 3-inch tip out on the ends around the perimeter. She let this process for 20 minutes, before washing and styling.

To recreate the bold leopard look, Kayla used PRAVANA VIVIDS Neon Orange + Pink equal parts with 1 part clear dilute. She applied roots to ends with a 15-minute process. For the leopard print she applied VIVIDS black with a makeup brush for precision.

PRAVANA VIVIDS are available at select retailers on www.pravana.com.

Maleficent

If “Mistress of all Evil” is the vibe this Halloween, Ellen Devine, master stylist at Reverie Beauty Co in Glen Carbon, IL and Sam Villa ArTeam, has a spellbinding Maleficent look that’s sure to rule the party.  This look is all about creating structure and drama with horns and a dark sinister wardrobe with an oversized theatrical collar.

How to create Maleficent’s iconic horns:

  • Create a section a few inches above the ear, leaving some hair out to frame the face, and secure a small ponytail. Repeat on the other side of the head.
  • Using a Sam Villa TEXTUR Professional Texturizing Iron, crimp down the ponytails to expand volume.  This will give enough grip to build the shape.
  • Backcomb each ponytail heavily and spray with hairspray.
  • Place pointer finger pointing down and towards the head and start wrapping the ponytail tightly.  After it is completely wrapped, use fingers to pull up the middle portion to create a point – the entire shape will resemble a horn.  If hair is not long enough, use clip-in extensions or secure a weft with bobby pins.
  • Anchor the base of the horn with bobby pins/hairpins and continue to fluff and shape the horn with hairspray, making sure to heavily spray the final shape for longevity.

“I saw a feather tie that was giving witchy vibes and thought that this Maleficent look was a fun spin on a classic witch,” added Ellen.
