Meet the Shullet – The Ultimate Rebel Cut

The Shullet

For clients wanting a style with attitude, look no further than the shullet. Andy Heasman, International Creative Director at Rush Hair shares his top tips for cutting what is set to be one of this season’s top trends:

“The shullet infuses two of most prominent cuts of the decade, evolving into the ultimate fusion of cool. It’s edgy and rebellious, yet still manages to maintain feminine undertones with a cloud-like, wispy finish.

Emerging as one of the trendiest looks this year, the shullet takes influence from both the mullet and the shag cut, cultivating into a versatile short-up-top, long-in-the-back hairstyle that clients will love. This look combines the volume, shape, and length of the mullet, and the natural texture, movement and disconnected layers that are typically featured in the shag cut.

The shullet can be completely customised to the client’s face shape and hair texture, with the opportunity to pair this look with a heavy or wispy fringe, depending on their preference.

If your client is looking to enhance that choppy texture with more volume, then cutting shorter layers throughout the top section, leaving longer length in the back and side sections will create body and bounce from removing weight.

The shullet harmonises the face shape and facial features of those with oval or square shaped faces beautifully accentuating the sharper definition of their jawline. Both those with straight and curly hair suit a shullet; for clients with straighter hair, the shullet will amp up their volume and body of their hair, whilst if your client has curlier hair, this style will enhance their hair’s natural volume and texture.

The shullet is all about texture and definition – so when it comes to styling, it’s all about amplifying the volume and creating that messy ‘lived-in’ rock chic look.

I’d recommend using the Kérastse Couture Styling Mousse Bouffante before blow-drying to achieve touchable texture and volume without weighing down the hair. To finish, I always use the Kérastase Couture Styling Laque Couture Hairspray to set the hair and create that ‘lived-in’ look with piecey strands, focusing on the top, choppy layers for more depth and dimension.

The shullet is the epitome of cool, so it’s only right that this look is paired with a unique colour placement to bring out the dimension – here we’ve gone for a purple and peach combination which contrast beautifully.

The shullet is all about experimenting with different textures and lengths, so encourage your clients to have fun with their look!”
