Denman’s Josh Woodman: Tips for Healthy, Happy Hair

As the festive season approaches clients want their crowning glory looking at its best and Denman Creative Josh Woodman is here to share his tips.

“Scalp health is so important and it’s something that I have been really doing a deep dive into. Anneliese Hesse words it perfectly: “If you imagine your scalp is the soil and your hair is the flowers it’s all about looking after the scalp (soil) to grow healthy strong pretty flowers.” I’ve been leaning into this all year so hopefully my clients are well placed to start their festive season off right.

I tell my clients to get a well-balanced diet, lots and lots of water to stay hydrated, a good quality shampoo, massage to stimulate blood flow. Also if you need a great detangling brush, the Denman D90L Ultra Detangler is a fave for looking after the hair. I love a scalp scrub and I like to have something at the backwash to stimulate the scalp. The Denman D6 Scalp Brush does the job as it has soft, bendable bristles that promote blood flow and don’t knot the hair.

For occasion hair I like to plan a look by breaking down the client’s needs for the style. If it’s glass hair, it doesn’t need much but BIG BIG hair needs a couple rounds of mousse. I’ll then look at the finish I want to create and assess the current hair. Is the hair very dry and needs a lot of hydration then it’s a deep conditioning leave in cream or can I get away with a shine spray? Finally I’ll look at what tools are the best for the job: ‘Can I go straight in with a round brush and style or is it a case of wrap drying 80-90% with a Denman Paddle or Original Styler to work in the product?’

Preparation is pivotal and I always teach apprentices and younger stylists to work backwards when it comes to styling: ‘How do I want it to look when it’s finished?’ The vision has to be crystal clear in my mind before I work out how to get there. I think a great exercise is to look at any social post or any glossy front cover and try to really break it down and PLAY! Have fun with different tools and products for each look, then once you have that down start to think outside the box. For example: ‘What would happen if I used this shine wax on a big bouncy blow-dry?’

Without a shadow of a doubt the best things I have ever invested in is my professional kit. It’s made its money back tenfold but having good tools you can rely on for the best results, makes your work more efficient, and ultimately allows you to focus on being creative. It’s a better experience for both you and your client too. You want kit you can be proud of!

I don’t think there’s one brush that does everything, as every brush has a different role in my kit. My go-to Denman brushes for occasion hair are definitely the Head Huggers because they give me great tension and control when creating shape and movement. Wishing everyone a great (and busy) holiday season.”
